Overview

This half-day programme focuses on how initial literacy skills are acquired with a particular focus on pupils who are new to English and/or those who may have had little or interrupted prior schooling and are therefore not literate. Based on action research in a number of inner London secondary schools, the content is underpinned by current theories of reading and illustrated with case studies.

Outcomes

  • Use strategies, resources and guidance to organise and carry out an effective reading programme for pupils new to English and new to literacy.
  • Consider the principles and practicalities of an effective and successful pedagogy and be able to structure this within your school.
  • Understand the need for a clearly defined one to one intervention programme.
