This programme provides insights into the reading process with emphasis on how this impacts upon pupils of secondary age who are new to English and new to literacy

Overview

This half-day programme focuses on how initial literacy skills are acquired with a particular focus on pupils who are new to English and/or those who may have had little or interrupted prior schooling and are therefore not literate. Based on action research in a number of inner London secondary schools, the content is underpinned by current theories of reading and illustrated with case studies.

Outcomes

Use strategies, resources and guidance to organise and carry out an effective reading programme for pupils new to English and new to literacy.
Consider the principles and practicalities of an effective and successful pedagogy and be able to structure this within your school.
Understand the need for a clearly defined one to one intervention programme.
